Cleaning brushes are used to clean the valve of the voice prosthesis and the inside of the prosthesis shaft. This is only necessary if the valve is blocked, making speech impossible. It is not necessary to brush the prosthesis as part of a daily routine, as this would put unnecessary stress on the valve. The brush should be introduced in front of a mirror for visual control. Care must be taken to ensure that the tip of the brush does not pierce the mucous membrane of the esophagus. Brushes are available in various lengths.
Some manufacturers include a cleaning brush with their voice prostheses, whereas others offer them as an optional extra.
Fahl offers a combination of a brush and a sponge to clean the voice prosthesis (Laryvox Duo Brush). With a clamp the Duo Brush can be mounted to a small flashlight to facilitate single hand use.
